The Scope of the Practice
The firm did not set out to practise in eight areas. The breadth grew because clients came back, and answering what they asked required competence in the areas adjacent to the one we had been instructed on.
A client represented in a serious injury claim returned some years later about a will. A business advised on its formation returned when a former employee brought a claim. A family assisted through a dissolution of marriage needed help with the sale of the marital home and, later, with the administration of an estate.
What that history produced is a practice able to see how a client's affairs connect. A dissolution of marriage in which one spouse holds an interest in a closely held company is not only a family law matter; it is a valuation problem, and frequently a tax problem. A serious injury to an employed person raises questions about workers compensation, about disability benefits, and about whether the employment can be preserved. A criminal charge against a person who is not a citizen may carry immigration consequences considerably more severe than the sentence.
Firms that treat these as separate matters, referred out to specialists who do not speak to one another, miss the connections. We keep them under one roof so that they are seen.

Where several areas are engaged, one attorney retains responsibility for the whole and brings in colleagues as their experience is required.
We will tell you, and where we can we will refer you to a practitioner who handles that work. Declining a matter that lies outside our competence is not a failure of service. Accepting one would be.
No. Personal injury and wrongful death consultations are free of charge, and those matters are ordinarily handled on a contingency basis. Other areas carry a modest consultation fee that is credited against your first statement if you instruct the firm. You will be told the amount when you telephone to make the appointment.
Sometimes, and where the answer is clearly no we would rather say so at once than take up an hour of your time. More often the answer depends on documents and on facts that take longer than a telephone call to establish, which is what a consultation is for.
